Can I let someone use my bank card or account for a few hundred euros?

In short

No, do not lend them. The money that goes through your account often comes from fraud. If you know, or should know, that the money comes from a crime, keeping it in your account or sending it on to someone else is money laundering (level 3).

Video transcript

Someone on social media offers 'easy money': lend them your card for a few days. Not allowed: Letting someone else use your account or card can count as money laundering: a level 3 crime. The right way: Turn down the offer. Report it to your bank and the police. Outcome (Level 3 crime): Prison: 3 – 5 years; Extra fine: up to 2.000.000 €; The bank: Can close your account.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • Giving someone your account, your card or your itsme/app access can count as money laundering (witwassen / blanchiment) (art. 502, level 3).
  • Excuses like 'just for a few days' or 'a friend's money is coming in' do not protect you.
  • 'Easy money' offers on social media are the most common trap; young people are especially targeted.
  • If you have received such an offer, report it to your bank and the police.

Penalty and indirect consequences

Fine / payment
At this level the main penalty is prison. The judge can also give an extra fine of 200 € – 2.000.000 € and confiscate the money. If there are mitigating circumstances, a lighter penalty (level 2 or 1) can be given. The victim can also claim compensation separately.

Why does this rule exist?

Money from an unknown source keeps serious crime going. Fraudsters hide stolen money by moving it through other people's accounts. If no one lends their account, they cannot do this; this rule protects both the victims and the young people who are tricked.
