Sunday morning. You want to start your power mower. It depends: It depends on the municipality. In Brussels' 19 municipalities it is fully banned on Sundays and holidays. The right way: Safest: no power tools on Sundays and holidays. Check your municipality's rules. Municipal fine (gas): Adults: max. 500 €; Minors: max. 175 €; Prison: none.
What is not allowed, what is required?
- The hours for mowing are set by each municipality's general police regulation (politiereglement / règlement général de police).
- In Brussels, motorised lawnmowers and garden tools (including leaf blowers) are completely forbidden on Sundays and public holidays. On other days (including Saturdays) they are forbidden between 20:00 and 07:00.
- In Flanders and Wallonia, the rules differ. In some municipalities, motorised tools are completely forbidden on Sundays. In others, they are allowed at certain hours (e.g. in Liège 10:00–17:00, in Boortmeerbeek and Haacht 10:00–19:00).
- In municipalities without a clear Sunday ban, the ban on unnecessary and disturbing noise still applies.
- If you are unsure, check your municipality's website or ask the municipality.
Penalty and indirect consequences
- Fine / payment
- Municipal administrative fine (GAS-boete / amende SAC): the legal maximum is 500 € for adults and 175 € for minors (the minimum age is 14 or 16, depending on the municipality); the amount is set by the municipal regulation
Legal basis:BeSafe – FAQ GASRèglement général de police Bruxelles 2026, art. 2 §1-§2
What really matters: the indirect consequences
- The police or a municipal officer writes a report, and the GAS procedure starts
Legal basis:GAS-wet 24.6.2013, art. 20, 21 §1
- If fines apply to minors, mediation is offered first
Legal basis:Règlement général de police Bruxelles 2026, art. 8 §2
- If the disturbance continues, the neighbour can go to the justice of the peace (vredegerecht / justice de paix)
Legal basis:Kamer DOC 55 0173/010 (BW Boek 3), art. 3.101 + Ger.W. art. 591, 2°ter
What do these terms mean?
- GAS fine
- An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).
- Justice of the peace
- The local court in every canton for everyday disputes such as neighbour conflicts, rent and small debts. It first tries to reconcile the parties.
Why does this rule exist?
In Belgium, Sunday is a day of rest and family time for most people; people spend time in their gardens. Houses are often terraced and gardens are small, so the noise of a single engine reaches dozens of homes.
