Video transcript

You're back from holiday. You left the caravan in the street outside your house and forgot about it. It depends: Trailers, towed caravans and vehicles that don't work may stay in the street for at most 24 hours in a row. Heavy vehicles: 8 hours in built-up areas. The right way: Put the caravan on private ground or in a signposted parking area. Also check your municipality's extra rules. Parking ticket (1st-degree offence): On-the-spot payment: 64 € + 10,67 €; Municipal fine: 58 €; If it blocks the road: Can be towed.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • Trailers and caravans (aanhangwagen / remorque) may be parked on the public road for at most 24 hours in a row.
  • Nor can you leave a motor vehicle that no longer runs (cannot move under its own power) in the street for more than 24 hours.
  • In built-up areas, vehicles and trailers over 7,5 tonnes may be parked for at most 8 hours, except in parking spaces with special signs.
  • Advertising vehicles may be parked in the same place for at most 3 hours in a row.
  • Your municipality can add its own rules (e.g. a ban on parking caravans). Check the signs and the municipal regulations.

What really matters: the indirect consequences

What do these terms mean?

GAS fine
An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).
On-the-spot payment
A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.

Why does this rule exist?

Parking spaces in the street are limited and belong to everyone. Trailers and broken-down vehicles left for a long time take up space, block the view and sometimes end up abandoned.
