I live in Belgium. Can I drive a car with foreign number plates here?

In short

As a rule, no. Anyone entered in the population register in Belgium must register the vehicle they use in Belgium. There are limited exceptions, such as a hire car, a company car, or a car lent to you free of charge for no more than 1 month.

  • Exception: someone who lives abroad can lend you their car free of charge for no more than 1 month. The car must contain a signed authorisation from the owner stating the end date.
  • Exception: a motor vehicle hired from a foreign professional rental company for no more than 6 months (this cannot be extended). The signed and dated rental agreement must be in the vehicle.
  • Exception: a company car given to you by your foreign employer. A copy of the employment contract and a document from the employer must be in the car.
  • Visitors who live abroad (for example, relatives from another country) can drive in Belgium in their own foreign-registered car; the registration certificate must be in the car.

What really matters: the indirect consequences

What do these terms mean?

On-the-spot payment
A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.
Police court
The court for traffic offences and appeals against GAS fines. Despite the name, it is not part of the police; an independent judge decides.

Why does this rule exist?

The registration rule means that every vehicle used by someone living in Belgium can be traced. That way, traffic fines, taxes and insurance reach the right person, and nobody can dodge fines by hiding behind foreign plates.
