Can I cross a solid (continuous) white line to turn left into a shop or petrol station across the road?

In short

No. A solid white line is not only about overtaking. You must never cross it to turn left, to enter a property across the road or to make a U-turn.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • You must not cross a solid white line. If the line separates the two directions, you must not drive to the left of it either.
  • You cannot cut across the line to enter a petrol station, car park or driveway. You must turn at the first legal junction further ahead.
  • When overtaking a cyclist, leave at least 1 metre of space to the side in built-up areas and at least 1.5 metres outside built-up areas. If keeping this distance means crossing the solid line, you must stay behind the cyclist.
