After 185 days (Level 2 crime): At the police court: 2.000 € – 20.000 €; Also: Prison or alternative; In an accident: Insurer may claim it back.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • A licence from outside the EU is valid for 185 days from the day you register your residence (domicilie / domicile) at the municipality.
  • Apply at your municipality straight after you register. The police check of your licence can take about 2 months. If the 185 days run out before you have your Belgian licence, do not drive; ask the municipality for advice.
  • Careful: a licence you get in another country (for example on holiday) after registering in Belgium cannot be exchanged without an exam. Exchange is only possible for a licence you obtained before you registered in Belgium, in the country where you lived at that time.
  • Whether you can exchange your licence depends on the country where you got it. For some countries this is not possible; then you must take the exam in Belgium. Ask the driving licence service of your municipality about the conditions and the documents you need.
  • As a rule, someone who lives in Belgium is also not allowed to drive a car with foreign number plates.
