Video transcript

You receive unemployment benefit. An acquaintance offers you cash-in-hand work. Not allowed: Any undeclared work while on benefit is forbidden: it is social fraud. The right way: Report all work in advance. Benefit and work only go together under the rules. Outcome: Benefit: Stopped; Received wrongly: Must be paid back; Also: Criminal case possible.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • Any work you do not declare while you receive unemployment, sickness or social assistance benefits is forbidden.
  • If a worker who does not receive benefits knowingly works undeclared and a report has been made against the employer, the worker can also be fined. Someone who receives benefits does not get this fine; instead, their benefit is cut and they must pay it back.
  • If a relative who helps with renovating your own home receives unemployment benefit, they must first check the RVA rules (information sheet T41). If they get money or another benefit in return, they must report those days in advance and cannot receive benefit for those days.
  • In sectors such as restaurants, construction, cleaning and car repair, inspections are frequent; your ID and registration status are checked on the spot.
