Can I park briefly in an electric vehicle charging space, a loading bay or at a taxi rank?

In short

No, unless your vehicle is the type shown on the sign. Charging spaces are only for electric and hybrid electric vehicles, and if there is a charging point, the vehicle must be plugged in. Loading bays and taxi ranks are also off limits for other uses.

Video transcript

You arrive at the supermarket in your petrol car. The only free space is an EV charging space. Not allowed: A charging space is only for electric vehicles, and the car must be plugged in. Loading bays and taxi ranks are off-limits too. The right way: Park in a normal space. If you leave your electric car at a charging space, plug in the cable. Traffic fine (1st-degree offence): On-the-spot payment: 64 € + 10,67 €; Municipal fine: 58 €; Blocking delivery or taxi: Car can be towed.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • The additional sign (onderbord / panneau additionnel) under the blue P sign (E9a) shows who the space is reserved for, for example electric vehicles, loading and unloading, or taxis.
  • A space marked with an electric vehicle symbol is only for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. If there is a charging point, the vehicle must be connected to it by cable.
  • You may not park in a charging space with a petrol or diesel vehicle, nor with an electric vehicle that is not plugged in. In law, charging also counts as parking.
  • A loading bay (laad- en loszone / zone de livraison) is reserved for loading and unloading goods. A space marked for taxis is for taxis only.
  • Example, Brussels: since 1 October 2026 there has been a rotation fee. A vehicle that stays plugged in for more than 6 hours between 9:00 and 22:00 pays 0,06 € per minute.

Penalty and indirect consequences

What really matters: the indirect consequences

  • If your vehicle gets in the way of a delivery or a taxi, the police can have it towed away; you pay the costs

    Legal basis:KB 1.12.1975, art. 4.4 (Justel)

  • If a charging space is occupied, another driver who needs to charge may end up stranded
  • Municipalities and charging operators can set extra time limits or charges; read the information on the charging point

What do these terms mean?

GAS fine
An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).
On-the-spot payment
A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.

Why does this rule exist?

There are not many charging points; keeping them free means more electric vehicles can charge. Loading bays stop delivery vans from double-parking outside shops. Taxi ranks make it easy for passengers to find a taxi.
