Video transcript

Wedding night. You want to set off fireworks to celebrate. It depends: Usually not. In many municipalities fireworks need a permit or are banned completely. The right way: Ask the municipality first. Without a permit, do not set them off; the police can seize them. Municipal fine (gas): Adults: max. 500 €; Minors: max. 175 €; Injury, fire: Criminal case, damages.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • The municipal police regulation sets the rules for fireworks; in many municipalities, they need a permit or are forbidden.
  • If a permit is needed, you must apply to the municipality before the wedding or event; do not set off fireworks without a permit.
  • There may be separate rules for special days such as New Year's Eve; these may not apply to weddings or Eid.
  • Setting off fireworks from a car in a wedding convoy also involves traffic and weapons rules.
  • Firing a gun into the air is much more serious than fireworks and can lead to a criminal case.

Penalty and indirect consequences

PENALTY NOTICE
Fine / payment
Municipal administrative fine (GAS-boete / amende SAC); the amount is set by the municipal regulation. The legal maximum is 500 € for adults and 175 € for minors (the minimum age is 14 or 16, depending on the municipality).

Legal basis:BeSafe – FAQ GASRèglement général de police Bruxelles 2026, art. 2 §1-§2

Court / prison
Usually no prison for fireworks without a permit; in case of injury, fire or use of a weapon, a criminal case can be started

Legal basis:Strafwetboek (W 29.2.2024) Boek II, art. 217

What really matters: the indirect consequences

What do these terms mean?

GAS fine
An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).

Why does this rule exist?

Fireworks can cause fires, injuries and hearing loss. Animals, babies and people who have fled war are badly affected by the sound of explosions. Explosions at night disturb the neighbours' sleep.
