Video transcript

You've got a two-minute errand. The only free space in front of you is a disabled parking space. Not allowed: Without a disabled parking card, you can't park there even for a minute. The card belongs to the person, not the car. The right way: Find a normal parking space. If you have a card, put it behind the windscreen so it can be read from outside. Parking ticket (2nd-degree offence): On-the-spot payment: 128 € + 10,67 €; Card not on windscreen: 58 €; Also: Car can be towed.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • A disabled parking space is shown by a blue P sign with a wheelchair symbol (E9a). It is only for the vehicle of a person who has a disabled parking card (parkeerkaart voor personen met een handicap / carte de stationnement).
  • The card belongs to the person, not to the vehicle. It is only valid if the cardholder is driving the vehicle or travelling in it as a passenger.
  • Do not use your disabled mother's or father's card when they are not in the vehicle.
  • Place the card on the inside of the windscreen so that it can be read from outside. Even if you have a card, you can be fined if you did not display it.
  • The card is issued by the Federal Public Service Social Security (FOD Sociale Zekerheid / SPF Sécurité sociale). It is valid when the cardholder is driving or travelling in the vehicle.

On-the-spot payment
A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.

Why does this rule exist?

Disabled people need a wide space close by to get in and out of the vehicle. If that space is taken, they may not be able to get to the doctor's, to work or to the shops. The rule protects their independence.
