Can I park on the left-hand side of the street or double-park for a short time?
In short
Double parking is never allowed, not even just to stop. You may park on the left-hand side only in a one-way street. In some streets you have to change sides halfway through the month.

There's no space outside the bakery. You put your hazard lights on and stop next to the parked cars. It depends: Double parking is forbidden, even for a moment. You may only park on the left side in a one-way street. The right way: Find a free space on the right, parallel to the kerb. Leave at least 3 m for other vehicles to pass. Traffic fine: Double parking, left side: 64 € + 10,67 €; Municipal fine: 58 €; Passage under 3 m: 128 € + 10,67 €.
What is not allowed, what is required?
- Park or stop on the right-hand side of the road in your direction of travel.
- In a one-way street (éénrichtingsverkeer / sens unique) you may park on either side. Outside built-up areas, you may not park on the left-hand side of a dual carriageway.
- A vehicle stopped on the road must be in a single line, parallel to the kerb and as close to it as possible. That is why double parking next to a parked vehicle is forbidden, even briefly.
- Your parked vehicle must leave at least 3 m of road free for other vehicles to pass.
- Some streets have alternate parking signs (E5: no parking from the 1st to the 15th of the month; E7: no parking from the 16th to the end of the month). Change sides on the last day of the period, between 19:30 and 20:00.
Penalty and indirect consequences
- Fine / payment
- Parking on the left-hand side, double parking and ignoring alternate parking signs: 1st-degree offence, on-the-spot fine 64 € (+10,67 € administrative costs). If the municipality imposes a GAS fine: category 1 (58 €). Leaving less than 3 m of road free: 2nd-degree offence, 128 € (+10,67 €), or a GAS fine of 116 €.

- Court / prison
- No prison sentence. If the case goes to court: a fine of 100 € – 2.500 € for a 1st-degree offence and 200 € – 2.500 € for a 2nd-degree offence.

What really matters: the indirect consequences
- If the vehicle blocks a bus, a tram or another vehicle's exit, the police can have it towed away; you pay the costs

- A passenger getting out of a double-parked vehicle, or a door being opened, can cause an accident with a cyclist; you may have to pay compensation

What do these terms mean?
- GAS fine
- An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).
- On-the-spot payment
- A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.
Why does this rule exist?
Parking on the right-hand side and in a single line keeps the middle of the road clear for traffic, ambulances and buses. A driver who parks on the left-hand side has to cross into the oncoming lane when pulling away. A double-parked vehicle pushes cyclists out into the traffic.
