You're back home in the evening. The only free space is right next to a pedestrian crossing, close to a bus stop. It depends: Even stopping on a pedestrian crossing or 5 m before it, or within 5 m of a junction, is forbidden. No parking within 15 m either side of a bus stop. The right way: Park at least 5 m from a crossing and 15 m from a stop. Never stop on a level crossing, not even for a moment. Traffic fine: Bus stop/junction (1st deg.): 64 € + 10,67 €; Under 3 m from crossing: 128 € + 10,67 €; Stopping on level crossing: 400 € – 5.000 €.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • Stopping and parking on a pedestrian or cycle crossing (oversteekplaats / passage pour piétons) or less than 5 m before it is forbidden.
  • At a junction, do not stop or park less than 5 m from the extended kerb line of the side road.
  • Parking within 15 m on either side of a bus, tram or trolleybus stop sign is forbidden. This is a parking ban only: you may stop briefly to let passengers get out.
  • Stopping and parking in a tunnel, in an underpass, at the top of a hill or on a bend with poor visibility is forbidden. It is also forbidden under a bridge, unless a local rule says otherwise. Do not stop within 20 m before traffic lights at a junction either.
  • Never stop on a level crossing (overweg / passage à niveau), not even for a moment. This is a 4th-degree offence, the most serious category.

What really matters: the indirect consequences

What do these terms mean?

GAS fine
An administrative fine imposed by the municipality itself. It is not a criminal sentence. The maximum is €500 for adults and €175 for minors. You can appeal within 1 month to the police court (the youth court for minors).
On-the-spot payment
A fixed amount offered by the police. If you pay, the case is closed and does not go to court. If not, the prosecutor takes over; the amount can rise and the case can go to court.

Why does this rule exist?

A vehicle stopped near a crossing or a junction hides pedestrians, especially children, from drivers. A vehicle in front of a bus stop prevents the bus from pulling in to the kerb. A vehicle stopped in a tunnel, on a bend or on a hilltop is a serious danger to traffic coming from behind.
