You argue with your neighbour about a parking space every day. Tempers are running high. It depends: Talk first, then use the municipality's free mediation. If it goes on, ask the justice of the peace for free conciliation. The right way: Talk face to face at a calm moment. For non-urgent issues, go to the community police officer; in danger, call 101. Consequences: Penalty: None; Mediation and conciliation: Free; If it goes to court: Measures or damages.

What is not allowed, what is required?

  • Step 1: talk to your neighbour face to face when things are calm. If necessary, leave a polite note.
  • Step 2: many municipalities offer free neighbour mediation (burenbemiddeling / médiation de quartier). Neutral mediators guide the conversation; they do not impose a solution.
  • Step 3: ask the justice of the peace (vredegerecht / justice de paix) for free conciliation. A written application or a verbal request at the court registry is enough.
  • If no agreement is reached, you can take the matter to court. If the nuisance goes beyond the normal inconvenience between neighbours, the judge can order measures or compensation (Civil Code art. 3.101).
  • For problems that are not urgent, contact your neighbourhood police officer (wijkagent / agent de quartier). If there is danger, call the police on 101.
